Kensington Gardens were originally the private gardens of Kensington Palace, opened to the public in the early eighteenth century. Covering 265 acres, they form part of the great chain of royal parks running through central London. Key attractions include the Albert Memorial — the magnificent Gothic monument to Queen Victoria's beloved Prince Albert — the Peter Pan statue cast in 1912, and the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Playground in the northwest corner. The Serpentine lake sits on the boundary with Hyde Park, offering rowing, pedalo hire, and the famous Lido.
